Laos's natural resources, largely untapped, include teak,tin,lead,silver, and gold. The churning Mekong River serves as this landlocked nation's major transportaion route and as its western border with Thailand.Water transport has long been thechief means of moving people and goods within Laos. Today,most land trnsport occurs onfoot,although bicyyles,Japanese motobikes,and severl thousand trucks and cars frequent the unpaved highways. Laos has no interal railroad.Railroad tracks link the capital,Vientiane,with Bangkok,Thailand.An improved highway runs east from Savannakhet to the Vietnamese,border and continues through Vietnam to the seaport of Da Nang.
